Why happiness is so important?

“It is a great mitzvah to be happy always…”
We all want to know what our unique path is in this world. The question is – how do we reveal it? Rebbe Nachman teaches that in order to reveal our own individual paths, we need yishuv hada’at – restfulness of spirit. When we find ourselves surrounded by confusion and distractions, and it’s difficult to think ahead even about the immediate future, it’s certainly hard to reflect and think deeply about the important things in our lives.

How can we achieve yishuv hada’at? How can we get to the place where we can meditate on our personal paths, and develop ourselves?

Rebbe Nachman explains that when a person is sad, his spirit cannot rest easy – and in order to achieve restfulness of spirit and be able to guide his thoughts as he wishes to, he has to be happy. 
Therefore, through happiness, it is possible to think clearly, and to find yishuv hada’at – and from there, a person can move forward.

This is what the verse means in Yeshayahu: “כִּי בְשִׂמְחָה תֵצֵאוּ” – “You shall go out with happiness!” For it is through happiness that a person can truly go out of himself, out of his chaos and enslavement, and be free to sit with a calm spirit and begin to reveal his own path…
