We asked the writer and producer of the best-seller book “The stolen Light” to tell us a bit about himself and how he came to write this fascinating book:
I began my acting career in high school. From the age of 15 I starred in many shows including “Fiddler on the roof” and “Casablanca”. From there I began acting in one of the well known acting schools in Israel. During my time in acting school I started to write my own scripts, and wrote the script for a show that I got second prize for at the performance festival here in Israel. After this success, I opened my own theater and wrote, produced, and acted in many shows.
“I wrote, produced, and acted in many shows”
At the age of 30 I began my process of becoming more spiritually and religiously connected. I spent every Rosh Hashana traveling to Uman to be with the Tzaddik, and was completely blown away by all of the beautiful stories I heard about how people had become close to Rebbe Nachman. So I decided to comprise them into one book which I called “The Stolen Light”.
All of the stories in the book are based on true stories that I connected into one long story.

“I spent every Rosh Hashna traveling to Uman”
Through my own experiences and connection to Rebbe Nachman, and from all the incredible and miraculous stories I heard from others, I felt it was my obligation to share this huge light with the world. We are constantly being fed with fear and lies from the media on how we should be living. I felt like I needed to give the public something true to inspire them and wake them up to a huge healing light that is already in the world.
“I felt it was my obligation to share this huge light with the world”
That’s why I decided to publish some of these stories. To wake up and inspire others to check out Rebbe Nachman and Uman for themselves.
.
My personal story of connecting to Rebbe Nachman is also included in the book. I know that without my connection to Rebbe Nachman and his teachings, and all the inspiration from friends that I got close to, I would not be able to survive all these years of hardship and challenges with my faith intact and a deep sense of happiness.
“In The stolen light, renowned Israeli playwright Yitzchak (Izo) Leibowitz lifts the curtain on the whole Uman Rosh Hashana experience. He invites the reader to share in some of the magic and mystery of Rebbe Nachman through the bird’s eye experience of Avi Neuman, a young secular Israeli who becomes reluctantly convinced to come along for the ride to Uman, but for reasons entirely his own…While there, he gets caught up in a bizarre series of events; meets some larger than life characters; and gets drawn into a mysterious spiritual world that turns his whole life upside down.
Come join Avi in this one-of-a-kind tale, based entirely on the true stories related by people at the heart of the Uman experience. This collection of fascinating anecdotes will make you laugh, cry, and most of all – think.”
“It was truly by the will of Hashem that the book became a best-seller.”
The day the book was printed, I took the first thousand books and went to the forest to speak to Hashem. I told him “You know that I came from the world of theater and fame, and for fifteen years I have been disconnected from that world and have no desire to go back there again. So I ask you, that if it is your will that this book should reach the hands of your sons, to please do all the publicizing and spreading of it without the need for talk shows and interviews from the media, and without the need to pay a professional to do it.”
“I went to the forest to speak to Hashem”
At that time I didn’t even have a dime to invest in the book. I left the forest and within one week I started to get phone calls from friends that I gave copies of the book to. Almost all of them wanted to be a partner in spreading and distributing the book, and asked me how they can help!
Each of my friends that contacted me, and their friends too, took loads of copies to their cities and spread it wherever they could. Because of that within 2 years it became a best-seller.

Today I am Baruch Hashem married with 6 sweet children, and 2 grandchildren, and I live in Beit Shemesh. My hope is that these stories continue to spread and inspire others to make the life-changing voyage to Rebbe Nachman.
