The annual migration of tens of thousands of Jews to Uman every year is one of the most intriguing phenomena in the entire Jewish world. Each year, religious, traditional, and completely secular Jews from all over the world leave their homes to make the journey of a lifetime to the mysterious city of Uman, Ukraine.

Why do they go? And why specifically do they travel for Rosh Hashana, one of the most important dates in the whole Jewish calendar? Who is this holy man Rebbe Nachman, and how does he continue to exert such a strong influence on thousands of people, more then 200 years after his death?

In The stolen light, renowned Israeli playwright Yitzchak (Izo) Leibowitz lifts the curtain on the whole Uman Rosh Hashana experience. He invites the reader to share in some of the magic and mystery of Rebbe Nachman through the bird’s eye experience of Avi Neuman, a young secular Israeli who becomes reluctantly convinced to come along for the ride to Uman, but for reasons entirely his own…

While there, he gets caught up in a bizarre series of events; meets some larger than life characters; and gets drawn into a mysterious spiritual world that turns his whole life upside down.

Come join Avi in this one-of-a-kind tale, based entirely on the true stories related by people at the heart of the Uman experience. This collection of fascinating anecdotes will make you laugh, cry, and most of all – think.

  1. An amazing personal view into the world of Uman Rosh Hashana. I couldn’t put it down..I laughed and cried the whole time.

  2. Absolutely a must read! The book takes one through an inspiring and emotional journey. loved it and hope there will be a sequel!

  3. This book gave me so much Chizuk, especially since I hav not been inspired by Torah and Hashem in a very long time and was starting to loose hope that torah can penetrate my pessimism and doubts, and this book gave me the boost i’ve been waiting for for so long, it felt like a gift from Hashem, to read something that filled me with hope and emuna again and the desire to try again, desire to connect more with the tzaddik and more with emuna and Bitachon in Hashem. And it was just fun to read, i could not put it down.

  4. This book made me laugh and cry at the same time. It really reminded me how much Hashem controls everything and how badly we need the true Tzaddik in our lives.

  5. I absolutely loved this book, I could not put it down! I could not wait to get to the next page and story to see how it all panned out. It was insightful, exciting, inspiring and emotional. I have already been giving copies to family and friends as gifts – all coming back to thank me for the great read.
