Rabbi Shimon Bar Yocahi

From the teachings of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yocahi
May 19, 2016 Ron Caras

Rabbi Shimon was a Tanna sage who lived during the destruction of the second temple in 70 CE. He was one of the closest and most prominent students of the well known tzaddik, Rabbi Akiva. Although he is attributed with many beautiful and lofty works, he is perhaps most well known for bringing down the wisdom of the Kabbalah in his book, The Zohar.
.
During his life, Rabbi Shimon made a remarkable declaration. He declared that through him, the Torah would not be forgotten from Israel.

“It will not be forgotten by his descendants”

Rabbi Nachman explains this:
.
It is brought down in the Talmud (Shabbat 138b): Shortly after the destruction of the second Temple, The sages went to Kerem b’Yavneh (a well known yeshiva housing the greatest scholars of the time), and said, “The Torah will eventually be forgotten from the Jewish people.” They saw that the Jews of the time were not learning on a level in which they could truly pass on the wisdom and depth of the Torah to the future generations. They feared that over time they would know less and less, until it would be lost from the hearts and lips of Jews forever.
.

“כי לא תשכח מפי זרעו”

.

In response to their fears, Rabbi Shimon declared that “The Torah will not be forgotten because of me!” He based this statement on the sentence written in Sefer Devarim: “It will not be forgotten by his descendants”. Rabbi Nachman reveals that the final Hebrew letters of each word in this verse spells out the name YOCHAI. The verse reveals that the Torah will not be forgotten specifically by the descendant of Yochai; his son, the holy Taana and scholar, Rabbi Shimon.
Rabbi Shimon explains that because of the wisdom and secrets that he revealed and brought down to the world in the Holy Zohar, The Mitzvot will again be infused with spiritual depth, and will remain alive in our hearts and minds.

.
On the day that commemorates the life and death of Rebbe Shimon (his yartzeit), more then half a million people from all over the world gather at his burial site in Meron, Israel each year. Jews from all walks of life come to celebrate the huge light he brought down to the world, and to be apart of the holy connection he established between all of us and our holy mystical Torah.
